action figures ina blur

Along the same lines as the kaiju monsters I have been experimenting with a few action figures... I think some further abstraction would work well. I need to get infront of some screen printing and play around.

I wonder what kids would make of them?

monsters

while exploring the wonderful world of Children's drawings it has sparked my love of monsters - particularly japanese Kaiju.

Here are some experimental images of a few kaiju and one superb creature of the deep - actually a toy bought at the sea life seal rescue centre in Oban some years back...

I'm looking forward to taking part, for once, plus the fact that I am only showing a concept piece to contribute to the massive and endless sustainable design debate, so there's no pressure to sell myself or any product, just to get people thinking about the way we use materials and the many, many different ways something ca be (more) sustainable in our consumer society.

I was thinking about this for the book that goes with the exhibition: basically toys and playthings are simply tools to allow children's imaginations to roam free, whether it is a stick, a wooden figure or a hat and blanket to dress up in. However, if we all learnt to use our sticks properly we'd all be Ray Mears... diversity in play, materials and platforms for imaginations to explore is surely a good thing (within reason - we still make too much that we don't need and have encouraged generations to ignore the value of the products around them). I'm still working on this...

Design Festival - Doing It For The Kids

Working with [re]design on their 'Doing It For The Kids' sustainable play exhibition.
I got involved all a bit last minute so had to have a quick concept that contributed to the sustainable debate.
This was the quick proposal I put together inspired by my very first 'action' figures I used to make out of paper - fortunately a few have survived, saved by  loving P and M...

...and these are my original figures from the mid 70's...
